FOUR TEAMS LEFT: COPA QUARTERFINAL RESULTS
By Jason Lind
Two more penalty shootouts were required to determine the 2015 Cosmos Copa semifinalists on Saturday night at Randall's Island. In a competition that has seen many close contests, 2014 champs NYC Gambia and upstarts NYC Colombia both edged through to the final four with wins over NYC Argentina and NYC El Salvador, respectively.
NYC Ireland had the most comfortable margin of victory in quarterfinal play, while NYC France jumped out to an early lead and had to sweat out the final minutes after letting in three second-half scores. Quarterfinal results below.
|NYC France 4||NYC Greece 3|
|NYC Ireland 2||NYC Ukraine 0|
|NYC Gambia 0 (4)||NYC Argentina 0 (1)|
|NYC Colombia 1 (4)||NYC El Salvador 1 (1)|
The semifinals kick off Sunday, July 26 at 3 p.m. ET on Randall's Island. NYC France and NYC Colombia will square off first on one side of the bracket, while NYC Gambia and NYC Ireland will meet on the other at 4:30 p.m. ET. Both games will take place on Field 91.
If France and Gambia pull through it would set up the second straight Copa Final between the two teams. Gambia prevailed 2-0 last year.
Sunday's winners will play at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium next Sunday, August 2 to determine who takes home this year's Cosmos Copa. The match will be played after an NASL bout between the New York Cosmos and Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
