NYC ARGENTINA POWERS THROUGH OPENING ROUND
By Aaron Cheris
NYC Argentina stormed past their competition in the 2015 Cosmos Copa Opening Round.
Three wins in three games put them atop Group H with nine points heading into the Round of 16.
On Saturday, NYC Argentina held off NYC Croatia 1-0 to get off on the right foot. On Sunday, they followed with a commanding 4-0 win over NYC USA to clinch their spot in the Round of 16. They clinched the top seed in the group with a 3-1 win over NYC Albania later in the day.
“We have a really solid combination of different styles, so we can play with the ball on the ground and we can play some diagonal balls,” NYC Argentina coach Carlos Ledesma said on Sunday. “Right now, we’re looking to keep playing the way we’re playing.”
In their victory over the Americans, NYC Argentina got early goals from Kieth Francisco, Rafael Abreau, and Damian Paz to put the game out of reach.
The Argentinians have a deep Copa run on their minds, and they know what they need to do to accomplish that goal. After allowing just one goal in the opening round, confidence is high with the team.
“We need to keep the concentration and play for each other,” Ledesma said. “Then I know the victories are going to keep coming.”
Ledesma, 51, briefly played in the MLS for the New York MetroStars in 1998. Today, he is still in shape and able to contribute for his team on the field.
“I’m the guy at 51 years old and I can still run with the guys,” Ledesma said.
NYC Argentina will face NYC Mexico in the Round of 16 at 4:30 p.m. on July 19 at Randall’s Island.
