A familiar face helped NYC Greece advance to the knockout stage of the 2015 Cosmos Copa. Former New York Cosmos striker Stefan Dimitrov scored twice as NYC Greece defeated NYC Senegal 3-0. NYC Greece followed the match with a 2-1 win against NYC Kosova to clinch a spot in the round of 16.
“I know that I have to score goals,” Dimitrov said. “That’s my role for Greece and I’m happy that I was able to contribute.”
Prior to the matches, NYC England dropped out of the tournament, forfeiting 3-0 losses to NYC Kosova, NYC Greece and NYC Senegal. As a result, NYC Greece finished the group stage with seven points.
Playing in this year’s Cosmos Copa has allowed Dimitrov to reflect on his time with the New York Cosmos, where he had three goals in 26 appearances.
“Being in a multicultural city like New York, I’m just happy to be a part of this tournament,” Dimitrov said. “It really represents a world cup of New York. I was extremely thankful to be a part of the new chapter of soccer here with the Cosmos.”
NYC Greece looks to their next game in the round of 16 and is hopeful to advance.
“We’re just going to try to go as far as we can in the tournament,” Dimitrov said. “If the opportunity presents itself, we’re going to grab it and try to win it.”
