COSMOS COPA NYC / SAVARESE, SZETELA, AND NANE MAKE APPEARANCE AT GROUP STAGE DRAW

SAVARESE, SZETELA, AND NANE MAKE APPEARANCE AT GROUP STAGE DRAW

By Ben Tetelman

A second 2014 Cosmos Copa drawing, this time for the tournament’s group stage, took place last night at Boulton and Watt in the Lower East Side.

Giovanni Savarese, head coach of the New York Cosmos, was there with star players Danny Szetela and Joseph Nane. After some kind words from Savarese about the meaning and importance of the tournament, the gaffer had the honor of drawing the first team for the 2014 Cosmos Copa group stage.

“The Cosmos Copa unites players from all over, and will help promote the sport,” said Savarese.

NYC Gambia was the first team chosen, and the African nation was later paired with NYC Bolivia, NYC Ireland and NYC Ecuador in Group A.

There is a lot to fear in Group A with some of the strongest teams in the tournament playing for a spot in the quarterfinals. NYC Ecuador dominated the qualifying rounds, scoring twelve goals and only conceding one. NYC Ireland came out with the maximum nine points after strong performances in a competitive qualifying group.

Group B features NYC Senegal, NYC El Salvador, NYC Ivory Coast and NYC Mexico.

NYC Senegal and NYC El Salvador, who prequalified for the group stage, may find it difficult to overpower NYC Ivory Coast and NYC Mexico, both of whom have yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

Szetela and Nane had the honor of drawing teams for the group stage as well.

Szetela watched as his fellow countrymen of NYC Poland were drawn in Group C with NYC USA, NYC Haiti and NYC Serbia.

NYC Poland, who has been one of the strongest teams in Copa history, will look to capture its third championship and oust NYC Haiti and NYC Serbia, who escaped the qualifying round by goal differential.

Group D is undoubtedly the “Group of Death” in this year’s Cosmos Copa. The group includes defending champions NYC France along with NYC Italy, NYC Albania and NYC Afghanistan.
