'SCOTLAND'S RONALDO' LEADS NYC SCOTLAND TO WIN

By Aaron Cheris (@AaronHowie

Prior to the start of this year’s Cosmos Copa, NYC Scotland president Colin Reid declared, “We have Scotland’s Ronaldo on our team.”

In Saturday’s Cosmos Copa opener against NYC Antigua, Robby Weir lived up to his president’s hype.

In the opener, Weir scored five goals for NYC Scotland as they blew past NYC Antigua and Barbuda 13-0 in Group G action.

“They had a lack of players and we had a lot of space, so we took advantage of the chances that we had,” Weir said.

From the onset, it was clear that NYC Scotland had the advantage. NYC Antigua and Barbuda had only eight players, which gave NYC Scotland room to work their offense.

Weir tallied the first two Scottish goals, the second one a finish off a strong spin move. A rebound and a few more goals later, NYC Scotland had a commanding 5-0 lead at halftime.

The second half opened with Weir completing his hat trick with a sliding goal off a pass from Sean Doran that extended the Scottish lead to six.

By the end of the game, the lead had more than doubled to a 13-0 and Weir had scored a couple more goals to give him five on the day.

“For one game, yeah I think so,” Weir said when asked if he lived up to his president’s hype. “The guys made some good setups.”

Other goal scorers for NYC Scotland included Doran, Mark Cassidy, Simon Kearney, Glen Reid, and Barrie Taylor. Scottish goalkeeper Malcolm Anderson was barely tested, but was up to the challenge each time.

NYC Scotland will be without Weir for the remainder of the group stage due to a prior commitment.

Without Weir, NYC Scotland will look to win without needing 13 goals, as keeping a clean sheet will be one of their main priorities.
