Each Cosmos Copa "national team" is comprised of the best amateur players from the New York tri-state area representing their heritage. Specifically, each team includes the following:
- Team president
- Coach (or coaches)
- 25-player roster
Cosmos Copa 2012 tournament will feature 28 countries.

These eight teams advanced to the Quarterfinal Round of the Cosmos Copa NYC Tournament in the previous year, which pre-qualifies these teams for the 2012 tournament.
